Joseph Smith's First Prayer

http://www.mormon.org/welcome This is a classic LDS hymn! It is a song about Joseph Smith at age 14 when he went into the sacred grove to seek which church was true. In his own words, Joseph Smith said: "I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun which decended gradually until it fell upon me. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!" Joseph saw God the Father, and he saw his son Jesus Christ. Joseph asked him the question that had be on his heart as to which of all the churches to join and they told him to join none of them! We believe that many other churches have some great truths in them, but many of those truths have also been twisted by the hand of man and they have lost many plain and presious truths concerning the gospel of Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ was on the earth he formed his church during his ministry which we read of in the bible. After left this earth, over time the apostles were myrtered (killed for their beliefes) and there was a long dark time on this earth where the voice of the Lord was not found. I compare the gospel to a glass table... when the Apostles were killed off that takes away the legs from under the table and the glass shatters. Over time people tried to put the pieces back to gether but in order to get it whole again you would need a new and identical glass table which is what Joseph Smith did threw Jesus Christ. This is where the faith of Latter-Day Saints (Also known as Mormons) began. And threw all the hate and persicution we have faced...200 years later our church still stands under a firm foundation! This song also has a deuette with the song "Lead Kindly Light"! Those who have listened to music understand well the impact it can have on the mind and spirit. Positive, uplifting music can bring feelings of happiness and peace. The hymns of the Church are a key part of worship and invite the Spirit of the Lord. They can be especially helpful in controlling one's thoughts. In contrast, unwholesome, negative music can encourage inappropriate thoughts and behavior. As with other forms of media, Church members are encouraged to be careful in their choice of music.
