Dyane Harwood graduated with a degree in English and American Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She has been a freelance writer for over two decades. In 2007, after her second baby was born, Dyane was diagnosed with postpartum bipolar one disorder. Two years later, Dyane founded the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, and she facilitated free support groups for women with mood disorders for seven years. Dyane’s memoir Birth of a New Brain – Healing from Postpartum Bipolar Disorder is the first book to cover this form of bipolar disorder. Kay Redfield Jamison, author of the bestselling book An Unquiet Mind, endorsed Dyane's book and called it "a gripping account of the awful juxtaposition of childbirth and the onset of bipolar illness.
