What is a Meniscus Tear? | How did I get a Torn Meniscus? | Dr. Bill Sterett

https://drsterett.com/ In this Sports Medicine Minute video, Dr. Bill Sterett discusses meniscus tears. The meniscus is the cushion between the femur and the tibia. When you have a meniscus tear, you either have to sew it up, or trim a portion of it to help eliminate symptoms. By the time you are 40 years old, the meniscus has lost about half of it's blood supply, and half of it's elasticity. As a knee surgeon, it is up to the Dr. Sterett to determine which portion of the torn meniscus that has enough blood supply to properly heal. The central aspect of the meniscus does not have good blood supply, but the peripheral aspect does have good blood supply. For Dr. Sterett's patients he tells them that if the tear has a 75% chance of healing it is worth sewing up. Not all meniscus tears need surgery. If the tear is asymptomatic then you don't need surgery. Locking, catching, or swelling are symptoms of a meniscus, and you should explore treatment options.
