Welcome to Episode 22 of Opera San Luis Obispo's "Memorable Performances" series! In this episode, we travel back to Opera San Luis Obispo's 2023 "New Year's Eve Gala". The Quartet from Rigoletto is one of the most famous ensembles from the opera world. In this moment the Duke is seducing Maddalena in a tavern, but unbeknownst to the couple, Rigoletto has brought his daughter Gilda to see "just-what-kind-of-guy" the Duke really is! The physical setting of the quartet is interesting: while the characters are all on stage together, they are in two different locations. The Duke and Maddalena are inside a tavern, while Rigoletto and Gilda stand outside looking in through a crack in the wall. Gilda watches with horror because she still loves the Duke and she had thought he loved her too. The Duke is sung by Tony Baek (tenor), Maddalena is sung by Karen Dunn (mezzo), Rigoletto is sung by Gabriel Manro (bass-baritone), and Gilda is sung by Kat Bowden (soprano). The Opera San Luis Obispo Grand Orchestra is conducted by Brian Asher Alhadeff.
