I am a bit obsessive when I review made in China watercolors to find out who is manufacturing them. that way if something I review is the same as something else I can tell you before you buy the same thing multiple times, unless you want to. The more info the better, right? I was curious when Altenew reached out and asked if I wanted to try their new watercolors. I was curious because I really like most of their products (their 24-pan watercolor set, their alcohol markers, their watercolor-filled brush pens and stamps to name a few) and I figured if they were going to bring out tube watercolors they would be good as well. You can see just their Art supplies on the Artisty by Altenew website. https://shrsl.com/48pah Here are the new watercolors: https://shrsl.com/48pak Altenew sent me all 10 tubes colors in the release and a set of round brushes. The brushes seem to be the same run-of-the-mill quality they had before, they are fine. My order contained prices for the paint between $7.99 and $9.99 per 8ml tube. The paint is not up on the website at the time of recording. Pros: Sold open stock Pigment and lightfast information included on tubes Very transparent (except white) Cons: Price (if $8-$10 per 8ml tube) Tulodine Red and Neon Yellow are fugitive (although the red PR3 is marked as lightfast 1 on the tube, that pigment is not lightfast in watercolor) As a range, the Prussian and Pthalo blue are too similar and it is lacking any neutrals like burnt umber or yellow ochre. This assortment of colors is not very useful on its own. I noticed some cracking when dried down in pans, especially with the phthalo green. Bottom line In my opinion, the quality is more like a nice student grade but the range is lacking many necessary colors. A rep from Altenew said the target market for this paint is artists but I don't think it will meet the standards of most artists. If you want to try these I would buy the Quin Magenta, Permanent Yellow Deep, and Phthalo Blue. you will have the best of the range and the most mixing possibilities. They are planning on cooling out with other colors so I would wait before buying more and really consider the price compared to professional quality brands. These paints are on par with Phoenix Artists grade, Marie Masters or Art Whale tubes but at a higher cost and with fewer color choices. Try a class! https://lindsayweirich.teachable.com NEW!
