Jabari Parker - Baseline Brilliance

Jabari Parker is a joy to watch. The high school standout (four straight state championships at Simeon) has had an injury plagued start to his career, but he seems to be rebounding from it well. The former consensus-first team All-American had a phenomenal freshman year at Duke, and has been likened to fellow Blue Devil Grant Hill. Coming out of HS, he was described as “Grant Hill with a jump shot,” and says he modelled his game after Paul Pierce and Carmelo Anthony. All those similarities are readily apparent when you watch Jabari, but I want to focus on something different. I want to talk about his similarity to another one of Chicago’s beloved sons: Dwyane Wade. Wade loves prowling the baseline off the ball in order to get behind the defense. I’ve noticed that Jabari loves doing this as well. Jabari’s length and athleticism allow him to explode to the rim with great ease. Cutting along the baseline affords him the opportunity to receive the ball, and whether he takes a dribble or not, he is already in a position to finish. The impressive thing about Parker is that he can finish with power, but also has the poise and presence of mind to know when finesse is necessary.
