BUYING A LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOG & PLANTING CHERRY TREES / ORCHARD MAINTENANCE ON OUR PORTUGUESE FARM

Hi there! I am Joseph. I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now. Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food! In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid Winter as we visit and give you a virtual tour of a multi award winning breeders kennel for Serra da Estrela livestock guardian dogs (LGD). The breed of dog is absolutely amazing at protecting livestock and comes from our region here in Portugal, the Serra da Estrela mountain range. The breed was originally bred to protect sheep and goats from wolves, there used to be a very prominent population of wolf here in central Portugal. Now with the governments help they are being reintroduced and our zone here actually has a breeding population of wild Iberian wolves, which have been spotted nearby on wildlife cameras. To deter the wolves from attacking sheep or goats and keep farmers from hurting the wolf population local farmers are able to apply to get Serra da Estrela puppies to live in with their livestock and guard and protect the flock from wild dogs and wolves that roam around the region. Miguel, Tish & I are shown around the kennel by the owners Alfredo and Isabel. We were honoured to be shown all their award winning dogs and we all fell in love with them. It was amazing to see how ferocious the dogs can seem as they defend their owners from the new arrivals (us) but as soon as they saw we were friendly and not a threat they could not wait to run up, give us a hug and a kiss and receive LOTS of strokes! Miguel and Tish came to the kennel today as they were picking up Lucius, their new little Serra da Estrela LGD. He is going to have an amazing life with them in Central Portugal here on their farm. Lucky dog! We all waved to Alfredo at the gates as we went our separates ways, back to our own farms. The next morning my father and I went to visit our local farmers market, in Fundão, it takes place every Monday and there is lots to be found there! We were looking specifically for cherry trees today, so we made a B-line for our trusted friends stall, Miguel Vaz, he has a nursery in Lardosa and we buy all of our young fruit trees from him. Today he showed us the varieties he had on offer, the price and which ones he recommends for us. We of course took his advice and chose some Lapin and Frisco cherry trees. We headed back to our farm with all the little bare rooted cherry trees. Dipped them in the stream to moisten the roots a little and then we drove our compact tractor up to the main cherry orchard where we began planting. It was a beautiful day on the farm today at around 15 degrees centigrade we only needed a short sleeved shirt in which to work. We spent a couple of hours making certain the new little cherry trees were happy with their new siting and then we turned on the irrigation for a little while, just to let the soil settle some what and gets those roots bedded in properly. At the end of the day I sat on a big granite boulder by the stream and watched the fog roll in over the valley. I said a big thank you to you all for watching and wish you all a very happy new year. I explain a little about what I will be doing next week, some more winter orchard maintenance I should imagine, with some pruning and some fertilising and manure spreading. Thank you all so much for watching and I wish you all a pleasant week. See you next time!
