Die Kleinstadt mit der historischen Zollfeste gilt als eine der besterhaltenen spätmittelalterlichen Stadtanlagen am Niederrhein und gehört auch vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bereits zu den beliebtesten Ausflugsorten rund um Köln. Die auffällige Beflaggung steht möglicherweise im Zusammenhang mit dem 1. Mai, seit 1933 als "Feiertag des Deutschen Volkes" gesetzlicher Feiertag.
