Historic images - Timeline : GOLDEN FLEECE (PETROLEUM) Australia

The history of Golden Fleece (petroleum) starts with Harold Crofton Sleigh who was born on 19th of May 1867 in Bristol, England. He left for Australia in 1888 and became involved in barge traffic on the rivers Murray & Darling. Sleigh owned the steamer Emu in 1891 & Ethel Jackson from Bourke, NSW. Around 1893 he began working for Harold Brothers, ship brokers & owners of Melbourne, and while with that company he privately tendered for a contract in which his employers were interested. He won the contract, which was to carry coal from Newcastle, NSW for the Western Australian Government Railways for two years. Over the next period of time Sleigh was involved in shipping to New Zealand, South Africa and elsewhere. Sleigh started in the petroleum trade in 1913, when a customer was unable to pay freight on a shipment of Californian motor spirit & the company took possession of the consignment and created the name Golden Fleece to trade on. In 1917 he registered the trade name “Golden Fleece” for “illuminating, heating and lubricating oils, including petrol, benzine and kerosene. He got a Californian oil company to supply 4-gallon tins of motor spirit, branded “Golden Fleece” By 1923 shipments of the motor spirit were arriving monthly. Golden Fleece was a pioneer of single-branded service stations (as opposed to the more common multi-brand offerings of the era), and its distinctive "golden merino" trademark was soon a common sight for Australian motorists. In 1947 Golden Fleece was made public. These were boom times for Golden Fleece and expansion and acquisitions were the trend throughout the 1950s and 1960s. H.C. Sleigh Limited acquired the fledgling Kangaroo and Phillips 66 brands in 1962 and 1967 respectively. Inevitably Golden Fleece was itself acquired by Caltex in 1981 and no longer trades under that name, though its unique livery can still be seen on some older roadhouses in rural Australia. A particular treasure for collectors are the globes (in the shape of the Golden Fleece ram) that sat atop the company's pumps until the 1970s, when the pumps were standardised. Golden Fleece was bought by Caltex in 1981, and its service stations re-branded under the latter name. In May 1995, Ampol and Caltex merged petroleum refining and marketing assets to form Australian Petroleum Pty Ltd which, in 1997, became Caltex Petroleum Australia Ltd, the largest refiner-marketer in Australia. The company now housed three iconic brands: Ampol, Caltex and Golden Fleece. Finally in 2019 due to trademark issues with Caltex, Ampol was re-established and made a return but unfortunately Golden Fleece was not to return to the services of the Australian motoring public via petrol stations.
