How to Prepare for the MMI: 10 Expert Strategies

How do you prepare for the MMI? In this video, Dr. Rajani Katta, author of The Medical School Interview and The MMI book, reviews her 10 expert strategies to help you prepare for the MMI. The typical format of the MMI is that you rotate through a series of different “stations.“ At each station, you meet with a different interviewer who evaluates your performance. Each station is centered around a different prompt, and your goal is to respond to that prompt. If you read the websites of multiple medical schools, some will tell you that there is no way to prepare for an MMI. In other words, “just relax, be yourself, and do your best.“ We disagree. Can you predict which prompts will be used in your MMI? No, of course not. There are dozens and dozens of different potential prompts that you might be faced with. Although you won’t know the prompts in advance, and therefore won’t be able to memorize your response, you can definitely prepare. In this video, Dr. Rajani Katta reviews her 10 expert strategies for preparing for your MMI. The first strategy is to learn the different types of prompts. Strategy number 2 is to do a mock MMI and practice. The 3rd strategy is to practice with a timer. Strategy 4 is to prepare for each type of prompt. The 5th strategy is to learn the 4 key strategies for acting prompts. Strategy 6 is to practice responding to high-yield scenarios. Strategy 7 is to learn the basics of medical ethics for discussion stations. The 8th strategy is to learn the key principles and general structure of discussion questions. The 9th strategy is to have some introductions ready to go. The 10th and last strategy is to bring in your own personal experiences whenever possible.
