Buffalo Rally Mosselbay 2016 Southafrica filmed by www.boddls.co.za

The Buffalo Rally is a yearly held motorcycle meeting in south africa. Buffalo Rally History In March 1969, a group of Nomads went camping at Silversands near Robertson over the Easter weekend and it was here that the idea of the Buffalo Rally originated. Over a campfire the plan for a national Motorcycle Rally was discussed by Messrs. Egon Mendel, Tony Bayley, Peter Flor, Tony Ferguson and Ray Bergman who were amongst some seventeen members who attended this event and whose names appear on a paper plate, which served as the official attendance register. Hilary Watts, the then Editor of “SA Motor Cycle”, nominated after much searching, the Town of Bathhurst, in the Eastern Cape, as a suitable venue. Tony Ferguson was Chairman and in charge of the rally that year which drew an attendance of 250 entrants. Even the Hells Angels were there, however, not as many as the Nomads. Nomads motorcycle club were not permitted to wear back ‘patches’ even in those days, only the small cloth ones. The Nomads Club were never given official credit for breaking the Eastern Cape drought in 1969. It poured for most of the weekend as it generally does to this very day whenever the Nomads Motorcycle Club holds a rally. The Buff has been held at the following venues over the years: The Nomads Motorcycle Club was founded in April 1966, and at the first meeting the subject of a constitution was raised. Nick Ehrman produced a copy of the Royal Cape Yacht Club constitution on which the Clubs constitution was based. The formation of the club was the brainchild of Les Hayden, who subsequently discussed the idea with YMCA Members who were interested in forming a motorcycle club for British Bikes of 500cc’s and over. The April’66 meeting took place in a small lounge in the YMCA in Observatory. The *founder members were, Messrs. Les Hayden, Nick Ehrman, Billy Steyn (Chairman), Pat O’Connor, Mike Wrightford, Brian Conyers, Robert Borrel-Saladin, Peter Wheeler, Fred Berkenshaw, Desmond King, Billy Burnell, Llewellyn Maxsted, Robin Vismer and Army Livings. Attached to the YMCA was a fairly large garage where many repairs were performed at night and over weekends. This became such a focal point of the club that the one time chairman, Nick Ehrman, was appointed as Garage Manager. Membership was around the twenty-five mark in the first year and runs were of the Sunday afternoon variety. Membership over recent years has hovered around 150.
