Brian pole vaulting at the Olympic Training Center on June 8th 2024

Pole vaulted at USATF San Diego Championships at OTC. Takeaways: • This was my first meet in over a year. • I no heighted • Try not to be too hard on yourself when you fail. Often you learn more when you fail. • I did not get injured. Which is great. My hamstring is coming along nicely • I was able to warmup and then wait for about 45 minutes before jumping and my hamstring was pain free • I felt very fast without a pole a very slow with a pole. I need to work on this. • The faster I can run with a pole the higher I can jump. • Never make a change in your pole vault before a meet without vetting it in practice. I had changed the very beginning of my vault which clearly reduced runway speed and penetration • It is better to land deep in the pits and even blow through before moving up to the next pole • After a long wait between jumps if you cannot get a warmup jump, take 1-2 full speed strides and pole runs • Take enough warmup jumps to feel confident you are making the pits. • On a short approach, like 5 lefts, it is important to push as hard as possible from the back foot on the first step, in order to generate top runways speed. There is not enough runway to ease into it. • You need a series of poles of the same type and from the same manufacturer you can move up and down on depending upon the day and the conditions. • Focus on having fun, being healthy and jumping for the long-term. • When your body is ready add lefts to your approach. Even 8, 9, 10 lefts if it helps you get on bigger poles is warranted. One of the upsides to a longer approach is you can ease into the run, you don’t need to push as hard on the first step, which can take load off the Achilles. • The idea is to build top runway speed at the moment of takeoff. Do whatever it takes to get there.
