CONCLUSION: OK, it's that time again, time to draw some conclusions about the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 "S" lens, it goes like this, in a nutshell; THE BUILD QUALITY - Sigma's global vision has turned this monster into a beautiful work of art, its made out of poly carbonate, it's weather sealed, the lens hood is one of the toughest, best built lens hoods I've ever seen - the whole package is an awesome physical specimen - on the downside, it weighs in at a whopping 7.5 lbs, its not for the squeamish - making a sturdy tripod or monopod practically essential - and the front filter thread is a massive 105mm making for expensive lens protection/polarization, neutral density, etc. Even with those negatives, we just love the Sigma 120-300's physical prowess, for build, we gave it a 10 out of 10 AF SPEED AND ACCURACY: It's slower than a canon ultrasonic - I'd go as far as to say that the Sigma is only about 2/3rds as fast the Canon - that said when you switch to focus speed priority via the Sigma dock then the AF speed is noticeably faster, just shy of the canon ultrasonic, but, when in that mode, you do sacrifice a bit of focus accuracy. However, even at its standard setting, the AF speed is adequate for nearly all situations. The lens also tracks moving subjects - think sports - really well. I recognize that it's a bit strange for someone to use a lens like this with portraits as his primary subject matter, but that's why I bought it, and the focus accuracy for my purposes is excellent! But in the end, I'd be lying if I didn't wish the AF speed was just a bit faster. For AF Speed and Accuracy, the Sigma gets an 8.5/10 OPTICAL QUALITY AND THE QUALITY OF THE RESULTS: For those of us that shoot in the real world, the Sigma is optically excellent, no it's not as sharp as the big boys from Canon and Nikon, but it's really close, so close in fact that only crazed pixel peepers with their test charts will be able to tell the difference - but the Sigma is also about half the price, and its more useful than the fixed focal length primes from Canon and Nikon because unlike those lenses, the Sigma zooms and the focal range is very useful for a variety of applications. The bottom line is the Sigma is capable of making superb images! We gave it a 9/10 for optical quality and a 9.5/10 for the quality of the results VALUE: It's not cheap, its just relatively cheap when compared to the Canon and Nikon 200mm f/2s or the Canon or Nikon 300mm f/2.8s - which are all about 40% more expensive than the Sigma. Anyone that wants to spend this kind of money on a lens had better be a paid professional or someone who's a very serious enthusiast that wants close to the pinnacle of image quality. That said, if you're in the market for this kind of a lens at this price point, than the you have to consider the Sigma as it's relative value is one of it's greatest attributes. For value it's a 9.5/10. OVERALL: 46.5/50 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! THE FINAL WORD: If you can afford this kind of telephoto lens and you're in the market for something in this price range that covers these focal lengths, then you have to consider the new Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 "S" as a viable alternative. If you can live with the 7.5 lb weight and the 105mm front filter thread then the Sigma is about 97% of the first party offerings from Canon and Nikon for about 60% of the price, oh, and it's more versatile too.
