When the Gig is Up | How Aging Artists Navigate Life Beyond the Spotlight | Aging Matters

In this episode of Aging Matters, we meet various musicians to learn the benefits and drawbacks of nontraditional employment. Many people come to Music City, Nashville, with the goal of making it in the industry. A few get the big record deals, but most musicians work gig to gig pursuing their dream without the security that a traditional 9-to-5 job affords, especially when it comes to insurance and retirement benefits. 🔔 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and click the bell icon to get notified about new releases! ► Subscribe to NPT's channel: https://bit.ly/ytube-npt ► Watch more videos from NPT:    / wnptvideos   ► View more Aging Matters shorts, documentaries and discussions:    • Aging Matters | NPT   ▬▬ Chapters ▬▬ 00:00 Introduction and Love for Music 00:19 Challenges in the Music Industry 01:15 Journey to Nashville and Early Struggles 04:10 Black Country Music Showcase 07:00 Balancing Music and Family 08:40 Resurgence and Recognition 09:40 The Manhattans and Changing Venues 10:45 Financial and Legal Challenges for Musicians 12:10 Support from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation 14:30 Union and Intellectual Property 17:00 Music for Seniors Program 21:00 Reflections and Closing Thoughts 🔹 Featured Musicians: • Gerald Alston - Lead singer of The Manhattans • Dan Schafer - Lifetime professional musician with ties to Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood • Dave Pomeroy - President of the Nashville Musicians Association, bassist • Frankie Staton - Songwriter, pianist, and vocalist, founder of the Black Country Music Showcase • John Engelland - Freelance musician, singer, and bandleader ▬▬ About Aging Matters ▬▬ Since they were born, members of the Baby Boomer generation have played a big role in shaping American culture. In 2011, the first of the boomers turned 65. As they age, the vast number of people entering their senior years will undoubtedly have an impact on how our communities understand and respond to the needs of older citizens. By the year 2020, Tennessee's population of people between the ages 65-74 is expected to grow by almost 48%. Aging Matters is a community-based conversation about what older citizens in Middle Tennessee need to optimize their quality of life and how the community needs to prepare for our aging population. The series focuses on issues such as caregiving, finances, end-of-life, dementia and Alzheimer’s through documentaries, town halls, panel discussions, short form updates, community conversations, and screenings. ► Learn more about NPT's original series Aging Matters: https://www.wnpt.org/agingmatters/ ► Enjoy Aging Matters on any device with the free PBS Video App: https://www.wnpt.org/videoapp ▬▬ About NPT ▬▬ Nashville Public Television, is Middle Tennessee’s & Southern Kentucky’s local PBS station.
