Milk Drop - Doc Edgerton - Triggertrap Tutorial - Motion Sensor

This video is a tribute to Harold Edgerton who, in 1957, in the first attempts on high-speed photography, amazed the world shooting a splash of a drop of milk on a red surface. That image, known as Milk Drop Coronet, became an iconic image in splashing photography specialty. Hands-on… For this shot, you need some fairly basic equipment and some fundamental knowledge of photography. First of all, you must improvise a consistent way to repeat the action precisely so the drop falls always in the same way. You don't really need a complicated device, as we did. Just hang a plastic bag with a tiny hole to allow the drops to fall regularly in the exact same place and it will do the job. In our case, since we do a lot of experiments with drops, we built that gadget, in order to have a comfortable setting at any time we do testing. You will also need a speed flash, set in manual mode, at reduced power, 1/32s, to shorten the flash duration – so you will be able to freeze all the details. To focus - since you must work in a somewhat dark ambient - you will need some sort of continuous light to help you light and focus on the first drop while setting up. Then, it has to be turned off as soon you are ready to expose. The camera needs to be set in 2 or 3 seconds, in manual mode. That is enough time for you to press the shutter and release the drop, while the sensor activates the flash. By the time the shutter closes, you already have the shot. Finally, in high-speed photography, it is a good practice to have a sensor to control the timing in milliseconds. It will ad precision and save you a lot of time. Although this technique has to do with a lot of trying and error, the right equipment comes in handy. There are a lot of types of sensors in the market, yet we were so surprised with the low cost and the practicality of Triggertrap that we decided to test it in this video. To know a lot more about this type of splashes, we have just published a new book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1542687748/... To use it as seen in this video you will need to buy a Mobile Dongle and a Flash Adapter. The cost is about $56 for both items. (http://worldshop.triggertrap.com) Music: D.
