queer degrassi characters || the village

support me on Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/robynisgay. Here's a Pride month edit about bigotry and prejudice, done with characters from Degrassi: The Next Generation, Degrassi, and Degrassi: Next Class. These shows have a lot of different queer characters, representing 6 different identities (lesbian, gay, bi, trans, pan, and genderqueer). Here's the trigger list, as promised: This video contains footage of anti-gay and anti-trans violence, slurs, outing, non-acceptance, general anti-queer bigotry, parental rejection, religious bigotry, abusive behaviour, bullying, a brief incident of self-harm, conversion therapy references, internalised prejudice, and specific bigotry towards gay, bi, lesbian, trans and genderqueer identities. Although there aren't really any flashing images, there are some very quick transitions between images at the end, so if you're sensitive to this, be careful! Notes: - This video contains brief footage in which one character binds his chest with a bandage. DO NOT DO THIS. It's dangerous, only bind with a proper binder. - I know this is my second Degrassi video recently. I will be uploading different content soon, but I had to get this edit out. - The thumbnail took forever, and it's still kind of messy, but it'll do. I didn't include a couple of characters - Vijay and Dylan - because they only appear in the montage at the end. - I tried to include all the central queer Degrassi characters, plus a couple of others. Vijay Maraj is the only regular queer character who didn't really get any airtime here, but he does appear very briefly in the montage at the end. - During the main instrumental, I started off with incidents of bigotry and prejudice, and then moved on to showing how they affect the queer characters. - Remember, bigotry can also come from queer people. Although there were a lot of instances of this in Degrassi, I only included one clip here where a queer character directed bigotry at another. In this case it was Tristan, who was pretty crap about Miles' bisexuality for a while, before Miles officially came out, when he did then accept him. - I'm aware that Rasha, who in this video discusses the bigotry she faced in Syria, is not actually played by an actor from Syria, and I'm not sure of the accuracy or sensitivity with which her story was handled. I wasn't aware of this at the time, but I'm sorry if including this was in any way inappropriate! - The ending instrumental starts off with the queer characters standing up and being defiant/happy/comfortable with their identities. For many, this was one of their coming out moments, and I chose coming out clips for Miles, Marco, Imogen and Alex. For Yael and Adam, I found other powerful and defiant lines. I chose one character for each identity represented in the show (Yael is genderqueer, Adam is trans, Alex is lesbian, Miles is bi, Imogen is pan and Marco is gay). This is followed a brief montage of clips of all the main queer characters being happy/affirmed in their identities. For the gay, lesbian, bi and pan characters, this was when they were happy with their partner, so it kind of became a kissing montage, lol. For Adam and Yael this was when they were affirmed in their gender, so I chose clips where they wore proper binders for the first time. - Of course I own nothing except the editing. The footage comes from Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi (Degrassi on YouTube) and Degrassi: Next Class (Netflix). The characters belong to the Degrassi creators and team, and to Netflix. The song is The Village by Wrabel.
