"Bad" by U2, a cover by Mike Massé and the U2bers (Phil Wormdahl, Tyler Johnson and Cameron Curtis). This one is for Billy Bunting, lead singer of Denver's U2 tribute band, Under a Blood Red Sky. RIP, Billy. I'm posting this on my brother Mark's birthday, so it's also for him. He's a big fan of this song, and it always reminds me of him. Let's just say he went through a bit of a U2 phase. The "Bad" in Rattle and Hum was from my concert. The wikipedia entry on this song quotes Bono has as saying the lyrics are about a friend of his who had a heroin addiction, but is also about addiction in general, including his own. It's always such a great live song. We based our arrangement on the live "Wide Awake in America" version. Phil said the harmonics at the beginning are borrowed from a later tour rendition. I love the studio version of this, as well. I went with the live version of the lyrics for the most part, but re-inserted "walk away"--he says "break away" twice in the live version, and I view that as probably unintentional. This is the second recording from what we dubbed the "War Project" (even though "Bad" isn't from "War", but who's counting).
