I've posted my vocal cover of this one before and got a lot of nice comments, way back when... This time, I've got a little story to share. Nearly 53 years ago, before I recorded this one with my band recently, I was sitting in the back of my mother's second hand 1952 Chevy, that had been given to us by my one of my paternal aunts. The year was 1967. It was summer and I had a huge decision to make and it was weighing heavily on my seven-year-old mind. My mom had given me enough money to by ONE 45-RPM record from the Bullock's department store record department, and we were about to go in. I had to choose between two of my favorite songs that summer that were competing for my seventy-five cents. What was it going to be? The radio edit of Light My Fire by The Doors? Or Yellow Submarine by The Beatles? Both were huge hits on the radio and I loved both songs. I had no idea what appealed to my seven-year-old sensibilities regarding "Light My Fire". I just knew I liked it. But, hey, what seven-year-old can resist the Beatles and their whimsical song? I bought The Yellow Submarine and happily played it over on my sister's record player - over and over and over again. But my love for Light My Fire only grew with time and I decided to have my band cover this one because in the long run, this song had a lot more impact and meaning for me than Yellow Submarine ever did, which I still like, but essentially 'grew out of". No comparison of the bands. Again, I love them both. Fortunately, I don't have to pick one over the other anymore. Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy. BTW, I hope you don't find my "new" natural look too jarring. I became a grandfather and turned 60 within the span of a few months recently and decided to stop trying to kid myself and just let nature take its course - and that includes letting my hair go gray to match my newfound grandpa creds. Cheers. *UPDATE: 01/23/2021: I took the multi-track masters and remixed this and some of our other best tributes recently in stunning 5.1 surround, but YouTube does not decode discrete 5.1 mixes as of this writing, so what you have here is a proper 2.0 stereo mix to accommodate the current limitations of YouTube. To really fully appreciate how wonderful this tribute can sound, though, I am happy to share a link to the 5.1 surround version to anyone who wants to experience this song in an incredibly immersive way. It practically feels like you're on stage with us.
