The Full Story of the Laughing Man | Drunk on Media

With 2020 Underway I thought it would be a great way to look at an anime that is almost 20 years old! Seriously though, Ghost in the Shell is by far one of my favorite anime of all time. The story, the action, the top tier Waifu~ It all makes for an awesome anime. However, there is another element to GITS that I adore above all else, and that is its ability to blend in western literary themes and Cyberpunk. Season one focuses on The Laughing Man, a super hacker/activist bent on exposing the truth about the nasty corporate corruption going on in Japan. In this first part of my new multi-part video essay series, I wanted to recap the main story of Season 1, so that when we get into more literary theory and comparisons, you'll be refreshed on all the major events. In future parts of this series, we will be comparing The Laughing Man of GITS to the literary figure HoldenCaulfield from Cather in the Rye. There are many more similarities between the two works that go beyond the referential.
