Evolution of Kazuma Kaneko's Art career

Kazuma Kaneko (金子 一馬) is a Japanese video game artist and designer for Japanese video game company Atlus. Kaneko is best known for his work in the Megami Tensei series of video games, acting as a character designer across multiple games. Kaneko is often referred to as the "Demon Artist" due to his artistic ability to represent otherworldly and demonic forms. About the SMT Artist: Kaneko's artistic journey began as an animator, but due to low pay rates, he was hesitant to continue. However, after playing Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, he joined Atlus in 1988, inspired by the game's dark tone and the interplay of order and chaos. His early project, King of Kings, played a significant role in shaping his future designs for the Shin Megami Tensei series. Known for his dark personality and interest in fashion, Kaneko often wore black clothing and sunglasses during professional appearances. He drew inspiration from various mythologies and ancient artifacts for his character and demon designs, particularly Native American mythology. Kaneko incorporated modern fashion and relatable motifs into his character designs to establish a stronger connection with players. When designing demons, he focused on historical context and mythologies. Kaneko's artistic process involved sketching on paper before scanning and adding colors and details on a computer. Some of his designs faced scrutiny from higher-ups, with requests for censorship. Initially struggling to find his unique style, Kaneko eventually solidified his artistic works.
