Arpeggio Study for the Nylon String Guitar in Jazz Olaf Tarenskeen Fingerstyle Jazz Course The Hague Check out my 'Shining Hour' video    • My Shining Hour guitar solo   On request of CGS Students who play jazz on classical guitar I constructed this arpeggio study as an example of connecting arpeggios on each degree of the Cmajor scale. The Jazz Guitar Arpeggios (on Classical or Jazz Guitar) are useful tools for improvisation in the aspect of : 1. technique: * fingerstyle foundation :’Rooting down’ with the RH thumb * proper fingerpicking techniques: the different RH fingerings for the arpeggio * position changing: in this concept of following the degrees, the shifts are not easy. They are placed according their melodic/harmonic significance and all position changes are done on strong beats (either beat 1 or 3 in 4/4 time) 2. melody and harmony: * using arpeggios for harmonic clarity * to create strong melodies that 'spell' out the changes * chord tones can be synchronized with the strong beats of the bar and leaving a choice for avoidance of the strong beat. Or: use the first two arpeggio's as daily exercise and play them slow. the second part of the clip shows: * tension and release patterns rhythmically and melodically * forward motion * how chromatic embellishments can be synchronized to spell out chord changes. * pickups and resolutions, and large intervals (broken arpeggios on the II and VII degree) In the Jazz Course we demonstrate how to use improvisation as a way of making music, enabling Classical, Fingerstyle and Jazz players to learn the essential skills to create sophisticated and rewarding improvisations or arranged pieces.
