After five publications and years of research in a Stanford molecular imaging lab, Deepika Bodapati teamed up with childhood friend and Stanford machine learning researcher Tanay Tandon to build Athelas—a software-enabled blood cell diagnostics and critical immune monitoring tool. A pivotal moment in the growth of Athelas (https://www.athelas.com/) came on a trip to Juarez, Mexico. They ran a 300-person clinical trial, where their tech found a blood cell abnormality that looked like leukemia—showing that their preventative model had the potential to lower costs and save lives. Listen to the founders talk to hear about: - Going from Deepika’s garage to major product breakthroughs (2:50) - How their experiences in Mexico made them realize how broken the healthcare system can be (12:20) - Building momentum and getting over over the post-YC slump (14:05)
