BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden | Zimmermann Band

Closing Zimmermann Band's Easter 2021 Bach series, the motet BWV 230 - Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden is a setting of the Psalm 117 - O praise the Lord all ye heathen (BCP). Despite being the shortest psalm in the canon with only 4 verses, Bach still find time to write four fuguettas on different themes. For respite, Bach sets the words 'Denn seine Gnade und Wahrheit' ('For his merciful kindness is ever more and more towards us') homophonically in a simple chorale-style; yet he can't resist painting the next word 'waltet', which literally translates as 'prevail' ('endureth' in BCP), through two simultaneous duets, each one competing for prominence. A slow double fugue then warms us back into the contrapuntal style - of particular joy is the final rendition by the alto in bar 92 - before the final fugue, simplly 'Alleluja!', builds slowly over each bass entry to close out the piece.
