Here is Catch heeling, now 10 months old. I am no longer using my hand for him to target off of. I always find it a difficult stage when transitioning from a target hand or hand on the outside of the dog's head to now my hand being at my waist. With those aids now gone I find my dogs want to turn their head in towards me and tend to be further ahead than I would like. I need to counter-balance that so I put Catch on the armband method for 3 training sessions, used my hand or a small dowel to convey not to turn his head in, and I placed a magnet ball behind my back which helped with position as I reward him backwards and behind me to the ball. Reward placement is very important when training any exercise in obedience as our dogs gravitate to where they are reinforced and you can use this to your benefit for many exercises. But you have to be smart about reward placement IE your dog is forging and you reward him well out in front of you, then he is going to be more apt to forge. And...I see this all the time...you are using the armband method, dog is looking up at the armband and the handler takes food out of his right pocket and delivers it across his body to the dog, or takes food from their mouth, the dog will soon become less committed to the armband because looking at it is not what gets him his reinforcement and his heeling slowly starts to deteriorate.
