St Mary's Island Tour - Isles of Scilly UK

In this video I take a look at the sights around St Mary's island - the biggest and most accessible of the Scilly Isles. This video was filmed over a few days but it probably is possible to visit all these sites on foot in just one day, although you'd have to do the day-trip on the plane. 0:00 Flying in to St Mary's 0:37 Hugh Town 4:35 The Garrison 4:57 Star Castle 7:16 The Quay 9:05 Town Beach 9:48 The Harbour 10:23 Porthmellon Beach 11:22 Thomas' Porth 11:52 Porthloo Beach 12:11 Bant's Carn Burial Chamber 13:20 Halangy Down Ancient Village 15:56 Innisidgen Burial Chamber 20:26 Pelistry Bay 22:53 Porth Hellick Down Burial Chamber 23:45 Porth Hellick Beach 24:41 Porthcressa Beach 26:40 Buzza Hill 27:30 The Boat Home Although I didn't intend to, the video takes a clockwise tour of St Mary's. Starting with flying in from Land's End airport we head to the "capital" of the Scillies, Hugh Town. After climbing up to the Garrison and Star Castle we go northeast along the coast taking in the beaches. The north east corner of the Island is a wealth of archeological sites with some incredibly well preserved barrows. Also known as Scillonian burial chambers these are unique to this part of the world. One of the remotest beaches on St Mary's is also one of the loveliest. Pelistry Bay is on the east coast about as far from Hugh Town as you can get. Never busy but there are usually a few people appreciating the beauty of this spot. The next beach round the coast is Porth Hellick. This is one of the wildest feeling spots on the island, although it does have a little harbour where there is often some activity. Just above the beach is another burial chamber, the biggest on the Scilly Isles. We now head back to Hugh Town, and my favourite beach on St Mary's -Porthcressa. This uncrowded stretch of white sand backs onto the town and is about as perfect a little beach as you could imagine. From here it's up Buzza Hill to check out the 19th century tower and yet another burial chamber. To finish we board the Scillonian III for the journey back to Penzance. This was a fairly calm crossing but there was a bit of swell running as we left St Mary's. Certainly a few very green-looking people as we left the harbour!
