After their recording session as they were getting ready to leave, they realized they needed a B-side… So they started an instrumental jam session on the spot. They called it Tequila. They recorded it in just 1 take and they added the throwaway word Tequila in a silly attempt to cover up some holes in the song according to to engineer Leo Kulka … after all, it was just going to be a B-side… That is until a DJ in Cleveland flipped the A-sided record over and played this Spontaneous B side… a few weeks later it rocketed to #1 for 5 weeks on the Billboard charts making it one of the biggest hits of the year and the first rookie band to have an instrumental debut single hit #1… They also won the first Grammy award! And you’ll love this one... Today we have a special interview with a pioneer of rock and roll whose band created one of the most recognizable songs of all time. It was a #1 hit in its heyday it went to #1 for 5 weeks and was the 2nd biggest #1 hit of the year and then 27 years later it exploded into our culture again when it was used in one of the most iconic movie scenes of the 80s in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I’m talking about Tequila by the Champs. The Champs were led by my guest today… Singer/ guitarist Dave Burgess. The band had been put together quickly under Gene Autry’s label Challenge Records and the band was named after Gene’s horse Champion. The band was in the studio to record the A-side with a Dave Burgess song called Train to Nowhere... They needed a B side for the album and this is where it gets interesting. According to Leo Kulka, who was the second engineer, the b-side song that ended up being Tequila was an afterthought after the band recorded "Train to Nowhere.” In fact, he stated that. Some of the musicians had already left the studio when it was brought up that nothing had been recorded for the B-side. The remaining musicians were rounded up and the song was written on the spot. The "Tequila" part of the song was simply a silly attempt to cover up the holes in the song. After all, it was just the B-side. Well, it just so happened that a few weeks later a DJ turned the record over and it started a wildfire that ended up with so many requests that the song went to #1 just a few weeks after that and spent 5 weeks there… It made a comeback in the 80s as part of the soundtrack of Pee Wee' Herman's film.
