Grids will Change Your Life | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography with Lindsay Adler

Grids will change your photographic life. I don’t feel hyperbolic saying that! Grids give you an incredible amount of control that will allow you to fundamentally change the way you light a subject and scene. In this video, I explore the main ways that grids provide you control, and then in the end I put them all together in a beautiful, dimensional fashion shoot. What are grids? Grids attach to modifiers and/or lights to restrict the spread of light. They can be powerful to create tight pockets of light or prevent light from hitting the background. They can be used for softboxes, beauty dishes, zoom reflectors, and more. They channel the light to be more directional and have less spread/spill in the scene, resulting in a more restricted area of light. How do grids give you control? 1. Grids help Reduce Lens Flare This is particularly important when adding grids to a rim light. In a small space, a rim light maybe create an unwanted haze/flare on the edges of your frame. Adding a grid (like a grid to a 1x4ft strip softbox) reduces or eliminates lens flare. 2. Grids Control the Spill of Light When you add a grid to your light, you restrict the spread and spill of that light. In a small space, adding a grid to light helps to prevent bouncing off of a nearby wall. When lighting a subject full length, a grid could help reduce the amount of light also hitting the floor. In a shot where you want to light in layers, a grid helps prevent light from hitting the background. 3. Grids Create Pockets of Light Creatively it can be very powerful to use pockets of light. You can create a glow on the background behind the subject for separation or just a kiss of light on the face for a bit more pop. Furthermore, you can create a dramatic, low-key image with a tight area of light on the face. 4. Grids Help Create Depth through Layering of Light (instead of evenly lighting everything!) Using one light to illuminate a scene is certainly not wrong. But sometimes people tend to just 'throw' light everywhere. Using multiple grids allows you to control the spill of light and then carefully layer in light... but ONLY where you want it! Shoot demo: In the final fashion shoot featured in this video, I use grids in a variety of ways. The goal of the demonstration was to show how grids give you control and allow you to layer light in a way that creates definition, separation, and depth. There were four lights in the scene, each one with a grid. a. A grid was used on the main light (beauty dish + grid) to prevent light from hitting the floor and the background. b. A grid was used on a beauty dish on a floor stand in order to control the light so it would only be used to create more shimmer on the dress. c. A gird was used on the background light to create a glow for separation. This helped the golden tone of the background shine through while making sure the subject didn’t blend in. d. A grid was used on a 1x4ft strip softbox to create a beautiful rim light without too much spill or lens flare in this low-key shot. → Article: How to Use Grids in Photography https://www.adorama.com/alc/use-grids...
