A morning walk through the ancient town of Guildford. Empty streets as the town wakes up in late summer. A walk past Guildford castle, which is the only royal castle in the whole of the county. It was built by William the Conqueror shortly after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. On 14 August 1868, a youthful-looking clergyman came to Guildford for the first time; he was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, then aged 36, and he was on a house hunting expedition. It is likely he was not recognised then as the already famous author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which had been published three years earlier under the name of Lewis Carroll. His home in Guildford is featured in this walk. Guildford Cathedral features towards the end of this video. It made an appearance in the 1976 cult classic horror movie The Omen. 00:00 Castle Hill 01:55 Lewis Carroll's home and Castle Cliffe Gardens 02:52 Historic Castle Arch 03:38 Guildford Castle 06:20 Castle Street 08:25 Rosemary Alley (Tudor period buildings) 09:30 Yvonne Arnaud Theatre 10:40 Millmead Lock 12:00 The River Wey 13:45 Alice and the White Rabbit Statue 16:31 High Street 18:35 The Guildhall and historic Guildhall Clock 20:00 Abbotts Hospital founded in 1619 22:48 Guildhall Archway and Tunsgate 26:00 Chapel Street 28:00 Quarry Street 29:40 Guildford Museum and Castle Arch 33:20 South Hill 34:00 Guildford Cathedral sunrise 36:32 Cathedral - South side sunrise 39:14 Alternative Cathedral view
