Europe || February 2024

Our second Voyage aboard the beautiful Iona. In February of 2024 we traveled from Southampton to Germany, followed by The Netherlands, then onto Belgium, before returning home - all over the span of a week. As this was our second time aboard Iona, we wanted to make sure that we made even more use of the fantastic facilities and restaurants on board, ensuring to try out some of the amazing specialty dining options over the week, visiting the Epicurean, Sindhu, Keel & Cow, The Oliver Garden and The Beach House. Day 1: As with the previous cruise, we stayed the night before in Southampton to avoid any issues than may have occurred with traffic the morning on embarkment. We were very fortunate to have an early boarding time of 12:30, which allowed us to have a full 6 hours on board before we left port. This time, we stayed in a cabin on a balcony cabin on deck 17, room 17303. When looking at the deck plan, we saw that this room was an odd shape, with its orientation being 90 degrees different to the vast majority of other cabins. When we entered our room, we found the layout to be very different, giving us what felt like "two rooms", one for the living space, and the other for the bedroom - even better though, we benefited from a balcony that was twice as wide as all the other standard cabins! Day 2 - At Sea: Our second day was spent travelling across the bottom of the North Sea, heading to Germany. During this day, we thought we best try out some of the restaurants we missed on our last trip, and ate at The Olive Grove for lunch, followed by the fantastic Sindhu for dinner. We ended the night watching Remixed in the Headliners Theatre. Day 3 - Bremerhaven: Our stop at Hamburg had been cancelled due to port traffic, so we stopped at Bremerhaven instead. Here, we visited a fantastic zoo where we saw many animals ranging from Chimpanzees and Otters, to Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes. Once back on-board, we relaxed in the pool before having a brilliant dining experience at the Epicurean, then having some drinks at The Crow's Nest before retiring for the night. Day 4 - At Sea: We left the port of Bremerhaven in the morning of day 4, spending the remainder of the day traveling back across the North Sea, aiming to Arrive in Rotterdam the following morning. We spent the day relaxing, ensuring to experience as many of the bars on-board as we could, and even watched a surprisingly good few games of Deal or No Deal in the Theatre. In the evening, we dressed up for Celebration Night, choosing to dine at The Chef's Table where we enjoyed numerous delicious courses. Finally, we migrated over the Skydome where we watched Charley Blue before retiring once again for the night. Day 5 - Rotterdam: Valentin'es day! We arrived in a rainy Rotterdam in the morning of Day 5. We were staying here for two days, so decided to have an active first day, with the plan to have a bit more of a relaxing day on Day 6. We started off using the city's metro to traverse over to the famous Cube Houses for a short tour, before heading over to The Markthal where were spoilt for choice on what to have for lunch! After eating, we used the Metro to head over to The Euromast where we had to wait for the wind to die down before being lucky enough to go to the very top and witness Rotterdam at night. We then used Rotterdam's famous water taxis to return to Iona, where we were very fortunate to have a second meal at The Epicurean for a Valentine's dinner. Day 6 - Rotterdam... again! We had a slightly later start to Day 6, choosing to have a lie in and relax. However, that was short lived as we decided that we hadn't had enough time at The Makthal on the previous day, so we hopped aboard the Metro once again and traveled over. Here we had the BEST chips of our lives (possible twice... but who's counting?), as well as some fantastic dumplings! We headed back to Iona in time for us to leave dock and have a fantastic sail away through the city. During the sail away, we dined at The Beach House, where we had another gorgeous meal! Day 7 - Blankenberge: Our final full day on-board. We had a relaxed trip over to Blankenberge, where we wandered around the sea-side town, ensuring to stop for a famous Belgian Waffle! Upon returning to Iona, we decided to hop in one of the larger hot tubs on Deck 8 to witness us leave Belgium - the last sail away for this trip! After indulging in the various specialty restaurants all week, we decided to head to the main dining room, where we had another gorgeous meal. Day 8 - Disembarkment: The end of the trip had come around already. This time, we decided to keep our bags and manually disembark instead of waiting for our allotted time. This meant we were off the ship earlier, giving us time for a McDonald's breakfast, before heading back home!
