Ashbury Heights: The Skeleton Tree -Track 03: Halcyon.

Sorry for keeping y'all waiting, rehearsals for a gig took up all of our time for the past four weeks. Here's the very third episode of the Skeleton Tree, 'Halcyon'. This experiment comes with a shoutout to youtube user MechnoSferatu who was the one that asked us to do a waltz way back before episode one :) This is obviously not our usual forte and it was a real challenge to write, but we are incredibly happy with how it turned out. We hope you can feel the heart and effort that went into this ballad because we really poured our souls into the performance. Making a waltz allowed us to revel in our ill-concealed circus-fetish and it was wonderful to be able to use snare rolls and giant crash cymbals with impunity like this. We did try more electronic approaches initially but after a while it became clear that the epic scale, nostalgia and sentimentality that we wanted to project came much easier with an arrangement based on more analogue sounds. For this track we spent a week writing and producing the song. Anders went through a lot of accordion samples to find the one that felt the "circusest". The vocals were done in one take without cuts, although we did about 50 of them before finding the right tone. Our neighbours must have hated this song long before we were done with it.
