That's No Moon: Technical and Diplomatic Solutions to the Space Debris Challenge

On November 12. 2021, the Duke Center for International Studies (DUCIGS) and its Rethinking Diplomacy program invited Dr. Hugh Lewis of University of Southampton, UK, to talk about strategies to reduce the proliferation of space debris, often referred to as "space junk," from growing at an exponential rate with potentially irreversible effects. Professor Lewis was joined by a panel of experts in astronomy and diplomacy: Professor Britt Lundgren (Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, UNC Asheville), Professor Laura Newburgh (Assistant Professor of Physics, Yale University), Ambassador W. Robert Pearson (Duke Rethinking Diplomacy Fellow, former U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Director of U.S. Foreign Service) and Dr. Benjamin L. Schmitt (Duke Rethinking Diplomacy Fellow and Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics). The event was part of the Space Diplomacy series and was co-sponsored by Duke in DC. Read an event recap: https://researchblog.duke.edu/2021/11...
