Yorushika - Usotsuki(A Whisker Away OST)(ヨルシカ - 嘘月)[Piano Arrangement]

It's finally here :) This is my arrangement of 'Usotsuki/Liar(嘘月)', which is used as the ending theme of the movie ' 泣きたい私は猫をかぶる(A Whisker Away / Wanting to Cry, I Pretend to Be a Cat / Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu)'. Slow songs are usually hard to arrange so that they don't come across as boring, but this one was especially hard since there were a lot of chord progressions/melodies that repeated itself throughout the song. In order to deal with this, I tried shifting the melody around the piano so it sounded a bit more fresh. Another thing I did to make the song more interesting was to integrate the various melodies from different instruments. If you listen to the original song, there's a reoccurring melody that the instruments use: A - F# - D - A. I tried to combine this with the main melody in the chorus, which gave a more "richer" sound than only playing the chords. The climax at the end is something that I haven't used in my arrangements so often('the third-hand technique'), but I thought it would really fit well with the dreamy/shimmering feeling at the end of the song. The most hard part arranging the song was controlling the dynamics of individual notes. I've always thought that the VST I'm using had a rather hard and clear tone, whereas a soft and darker tone would be suitable for this song. So I cranked the overall volume of the notes way down, and tried to keep the dynamic range smaller than usual. Overall, this song took a long time to arrange, and some extra effort.
