ベラボーの唄 - Berabo no Uta - English Translation | Sung by Toshi Tsuchitori

By Soeda Azenbo 添田唖蝉坊 Sung by Toshi Tsuchitori 土取利行 "Song of Fools" Here's a song that I had the transcription up for a while but never got around to turning into a video. Well, here it is! I wanted to upload this on the same day as my urbanist video, since I understand nobody here subscribed to me for that kind of content. I still plan on doing that kind of thing, but I won't let that get in the way of my translations. There's plenty of rich history that fascinates me enough to do these videos frequently. Translator Notes--- Note 1: 家にゃはらんだ カカアが待つよ can have many meanings. はらんだ means "to become pregnant" or "to be swollen with". So with no other context this could mean "the building is brimming" with something, likely people, but then it says "your wife is waiting for you". Now the meaning is a little more significant. Either the narrator's wife is pregnant at home, with the discomfort that comes with it, and he can't be there for her, or his narrator's wife conceived with a man that isn't him at his house. Pretty crazy stuff! I decided to use the line "it's so crammed in this place" to subtlely hint at this idea, of infidelity, of pregnancy discomfort, and of a bar that's too full. Note 2: Yaoya Oshichi is a girl who fell in love with a temple page after meeting him during a fire. Wanting to meet him again, she attempted to start another fire, but was caught and tried before a magistrate. Wanting to sentence her as a 15 year old, which was the age considered a minor in those days, such that she would avoid the death penalty, he asked for her age, saying "You're fifteen years old, are you not?" But she answered that she was well and truly 16 years old, which forced the magistrate to sentence her to death, and she was burned at the stake. Her story became the subject of a number of novels and plays. Note 3: 6 gou is roughly 1 liter, or 4 and a half US cups. So 4 cups of rice. Damn.
