Nagaland: Post-poll violence rocks Noklak, one killed

With moments to go till election results are announced, violence erupted on the streets of Noklak in Nagaland when a civilian was killed after security forces resorted to gunfire to quell protests. Things took an ugly turn on Tuesday evening when BJP members, peeved that their demand for a re-poll at the 7-Noklak village-A polling station was not taken up, began a protest. Although the Commission declared re-polling in 4 Constituencies, the list did not include 7Noklak A polling station. It is believed that this led to the ensuing protest. Scuffles and clashes ensued during which a local, identified as 33-year-old Tongpa, was shot in the stomach. He died on the spot. Another person, who received a bullet injury in the head, has been admitted to a hospital. The BJP had earlier dashed off a communique to the Returning Officer alleging malpractice at the polling station. Party workers alleged that EVMs were not being sealed before being transported to the deputy commissioner's office.
