Mercedes was born from trucks and limousines, therefore it was always difficult for them to compete in the small car segment. BMW on the other hand was born from economy cars, the grew because of the small car segment. They enjoyed years of success with the BMW 1-Series, but since the abandoned the rear-wheel drive in favor of front-wheel drive, it lost its charm. I always found the 2020s Audi A3 models to be desirable. In fact they interested me more than the Volkswagen Golf!
