The saluki is a sighthound that originates in the fertile crescent, an area that extends from the Nile River on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula in the south to the southern fringe of Turkey in the North. The saluki is one of several breeds that can trace its roots back to the ancient Egyptians. The dogs have been prized since ancient times for its ability in the hunt, running down gazelle, hare and other swift prey over arid desert sands, providing sport for kings and food for nomads. Breeding with non-salukis was strictly forbidden, a practice that allowed the Saluki to remain virtually unchanged for thousands of years, although it has always exhibited a wide variety of styles. The variety arose from the wide distribution of the breed throughout the Middle East, tribes bred their salukis in direction that were best adapted to hunt specific game over specific terrain.
