"Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending" was written by Charles Wesley in 1758. The tune is 'Helmsley'. Its composer is uncertain. John Wesley attributed it to Thomas Olivers but Olivers is said to have heard the tune on the street somewhere. Since the first line resembles a tune by violinist and composer Thomas Augustine Arne some have suggested that it was composed by Arne. However, it most probably came from Martin Madan's 'Collection of Psalms and Hymn Tunes Sung at the Chapel of Lock Hospital', where he was chaplain.
