CSU Marching Band "Ray Charles Tribute" 2004

This is the Colorado State University Marching Band under the direction of J. Steven Moore performing at the CBA Regional in Loveland, Colorado. The "Ray Charles Tribute" was the second show performed at the high school regional, immediately following the "Swing Show." This show was learned in a minimum amount of rehearsal time. If memory serves correctly, the closer was distributed to the band on Wednesday of the same week (or close). Drill was designed to keep moving and be learned quickly. This is achieved through using the 4 step grid, maximizing the use of shifting forms or follow the leader at an 8 to 5 step (22.5 inches), and incorporating dance moves. Marching basics prepare the band to "drop in" a slide or FTL or box 4 or 8 around the form easily and with minimum instruction. CSU students are smart, so they learn fast. Musical challenges included performing the Ray Charles blues and swing groove while moving. Much credit goes to the drum majors for holding it all together quickly. And kudos to drumline for providing the groove that the brass and woodwinds could play in time with.
