The soft trauma inserts help disperse the impact force and reduce the trauma to the body but do not offer any further protection than the vest itself. The hard trauma plates offer additional protection against fast handgun rounds like the 5.7mm and .30 cal carbine. Neither of these options will protect against rifle rounds. Enter the HighCom Security Rifle Special Threat Plate (RSTP). In the 5x8 size this plate only weighs 1.2 lbs and is only .55 inches thick! It makes an excellent replacement for the issued trauma inserts at only 0.2 lbs more, and offers protection against 5.56, 7.62x39 and .308 when worn in conjunction with the 3A soft armor vest.
