A tale of two cities: Heritage trams in Blackpool, UK and Prague, Czechia - comparison in Summer '24

Blackpool, in the United Kingdom, operates the very first electric tramway in the UK which began operation in September 1885. It is the only one in the UK that has run continuously in its transition to modern light rail operation, albeit with some winter closures. Prague, capital city of Czechia (formerly the Czech Republic), has run trams for well over 140 years, starting with horse traction but converting to electric in the 1890s. Blackpool runs 18 modern Bombardier Flexity 2 trams but has a vast array of former trams, some of which actually operate but a lot are out of service. Its heritage fleet is almost as big as Prague's! Prague runs 895 trams, with many modern low floor examples running alongside high floor traditional Tatra T3 and KT8D5 cars. All of the Tatra KT8D5s have been rebuilt with low floor centre sections and almost 100 of the Tatra T3 trams have been rebodied with longer bodies with a low floor centre. It is known as the Tatra T3R.PLF. Its heritage and museum fleets can be interspersed and all of them are runners subject to the usual inspections that apply to the everyday fleet. They are all turned out in immaculate condition - if they do not make the grade, they cannot go out. In this presentation, we look at both and examine "a tale of two cities" to see which one has the better operation.
