Assetto Corsa: 1964 Austin Mini Cooper S at Oulton Park

Due to the Suez Crisis in 1956, the English were forced again to ration fuel, having just barely recovered from World War 2. Large cars became economically impossible, leading to an increase in imported cars to the UK. Leonard Lord, head of the British Motor Corporation, had little choice but to force his design team to prioritize little cars. Alec Issigonis, designer of the Morris Minor, had recently re-joined BMC, and together with his tiny team created an initial prototype measuring only 10 by 4 by 4 feet, with 6 feet of the floor space given to passengers. To accomplish this, a BMC A-Series 4 cylinder engine was placed transversely in front, with the transmission built directly into the sump, which then connected to each front wheel. ADO15, as it was first called, initially used a 1 liter engine, but it was decided after testing that 85 mph was too frightening for such a tiny car, so a 845cc engine became standard when the car launched in 1959. Further space saving was achieved by skipping the suspension almost entirely, instead opting for a set of rubber cones, designed by Issigonis friend Alex Moulton. The shape of the cones created a natural damper, and with the wide stance of the car, and it's tiny 10 inch wheels, the mini was essentially a 4 seater go kart. Despite it's revolutionary design, the Austin Se7en and Morris Mini were not huge sellers until a few years later, when Issigonis teamed with John Cooper, head of the Cooper F1 and F2 teams, to design a performance version. Cooper started by putting the 1 liter engine back into the car. Fully tuned and with dual carburetors, horsepower jumped from 35 to 55, giving the car a top speed of nearly 100 mph. It also featured 7 inch disc brakes. BMC manufactured over 1,000 of the Cooper Mini to meet FIA Group 2 homologation, at which point the mini truly took over the world. The car battled the Jaguar Mk. 2 and Lotus Cortina in British saloon car racing, then tackled the large Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores of the Australian Touring Car Championship, creating david vs goliath spectacles that fans enjoyed throughout the 60's and early 70's. The Mini Cooper also excelled at rallying, it's front wheel drive dominating the Monte Carlo and Finnish 1000 Lakes rallies from 1964-1967. https://www.racedepartment.com/downlo... https://www.mediafire.com/file/hpdqao... https://pessiogarage.com/products/mini/
