31st Saving Philippines Reef Expedition June 2024 - Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park

Lying at the heart of the Coral Triangle, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park plays a critical role in being the storehouse of Philippine marine biodiversity and supplies the Sulu Sea and adjacent fishing grounds with fish and coral larvae, which has many implications in the country’s fisheries and food security. Understandably it’s an area valued and supported by local communities, conservationists, divers and scientists around the world. The purpose of our 2024 reef monitoring expedition is to determine the coral reef condition within Park and surrounding reefs in comparison to data collected since 1984 at 3 key locations. Scuba divers from around the world including members from the Unico Conservation Foundation were led by the experienced team of educators and scientists from the Coastal Conservation and education foundation for this important expedition. Their task? Undertake reef surveys using prescribed methods during morning and afternoon dives and snorkels to document the status of these coral reefs.
