Manchester United v Wolves, 10th February 1973

Extended highlights of a First Division match between Manchester United and Wolves at Old Trafford on 10th February 1973. The 1972-73 season was the pinnacle of the potent Wolves strike partnership of Derek Dougan and John Richards, with Richards scoring a very impressive 36 league and cup goals while 'The Doog' contributed 17 goals. An England cap was just reward for Richards at the end of the season but, in the Home Championship match against Northern Ireland on 12th May 1973, 'King John' was played out of position by manager Alf Ramsey. It would subsequently prove to be Richards' only England appearance, scant reward for such an accomplished goalscorer of that period. Throughout much of the season, the Wolves strikers were supported by a highly capable midfield, led by inspirational captain Mike Bailey, with the very efficient Jim McCalliog as Bailey's partner in the centre of midfield and the creative talents of left winger Dave Wagstaffe and Kenny Hibbitt on opposite flanks. However, injuries often prevented Wolves manager Bill McGarry from fielding a full strength team and against United, McGarry was forced into further changes from the team that had beaten Liverpool in the previous match (   • Wolves v Liverpool, 27th January 1973  ). Defender Bernard Shaw had replaced the injured Bailey against Liverpool and he was selected once again in an unfamiliar central midfield role. With Hibbitt also absent, Jim McCalliog occupied right midfield with the skilful Danny Hegan alongside Shaw in the centre. With Wagstaffe and Dougan also injured, McGarry chose Steve Daley and Steve Kindon as their respective replacements. In defence, Derek Parkin's continued long-term absence through illness proved to to be an issue for McGarry and his team selection. In general, Gerry Taylor or John McAlle deputised for Parkin at left-back, with McAlle chosen for the position against United with Derek Jefferson occupying McAlle's usual centre-half berth alongside Frank Munro. In contrast to Wolves, who were 8th in the league ahead of their match at Old Trafford, United were a lowly 19th and just one point clear of the relegation zone. Tommy Docherty had been appointed as manager on 22nd December 1972, just three days after the dismissal of his predecessor Frank O'Farrell, but United had yet to win under Docherty prior to their match against Wolves. Included in their team to face Wolves at a very muddy Old Trafford were Docherty signings Alex Forsyth, George Graham, Lou Macari, Jim Holton and Mick Martin. Originally broadcast by Granada TV, with Gerald Sinstadt providing commentary on a particularly bad-tempered match. Approximate time of goals on YouTube footage: 22:50 Manchester United 1 Wolves 0 (Bobby Charlton - Penalty) 28:15 Manchester United 2 Wolves 0 (Bobby Charlton) 31:52 Manchester United 2 Wolves 1 (Danny Hegan)
