Pirates of Tortuga (1961)

In the 17th century, a Welsh captain, Bart (Ken Scott), and his crew are dispatched to the Spanish-controlled island of Tortuga, where famed privateer Henry Morgan (Robert Stephens) has defected from his support of the English empire and is running a strictly piratical venture, stopping any and all vessels, including British carriers. Since the captain cannot attack the island without incurring the wrath of the Spanish government, he must go one-on-one with Morgan himself. A comely female thief, Meg (Leticia Román), inadvertently stows away on the captain's vessel. Her efforts to acquire the standing of a lady are initially mocked by the crew until they soften towards her, in part with seduction in mind and in part out of pity. She is initially deposited on the nearby island of Jamaica, and mistaken for a Lady, she steps up to the plate, and manages to catch the romantic eye of the colonial Governor, for whom she makes a halfhearted play before readjusting her sights and snaring Bart, the captain himself. In the meantime, the captain fully engages in pursuing the shifty pirate Morgan. A 1961 DeLuxe Color American swashbuckler film directed by Robert D. Webb, produced by Sam Katzman, screenplay by Jesse Lasky Jr. and Melvin Levy based on a story by Pat Silver, cinematography by Ellis W. Carter, starring Ken Scott, Leticia Román, Dave King, John Richardson, Rafer Johnson, and Robert Stephens. Rafer Johnson, who played John Gammel, was the Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon in 1960. British comedian Dave King makes his screen debut. Worth noting was just how long it took a graduate of the Twentieth Century Fox talent school to graduate – at the end of a five-year contract Ken Scott, "Desire in the Dust" (1960) finally achieved leading man status. Scott was an American actor best known for his work in films in the 1950s. He had lead roles in several of the studio's API second features and made appearances in some of Fox's major films. Following his years at Fox he appeared as a guest star on numerous American television series. Letícia Román is an Italian film actress, fluent in five languages. Her parents didn't want her to be an actress, but after arriving in Hollywood, she began studying acting under Sandy Meisner, and studied with Gladys Vogeler to diminish her accent. Román started her film career with a small part in the Elvis Presley film "G.I. Blues" (1960), and had her first leading role in "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" (1963). Román then went to Germany where she made several films including Russ Meyer's "Fanny Hill" (1964). Román retired from acting after getting married in 1966, and later worked in the real estate business in Los Angeles. Dave King was an English comedian, actor and singer, bestremembered for his role as the corrupt policeman 'Parky' in the British gangster film "The Long Good Friday" (1980). John Richardson was an English actor who appeared in films from the late 1950s until the early 1990s. He was a male lead in Italian genre films, most notably Mario Bava's "Black Sunday" (1960) with Barbara Steele, but he was best known for playing the love interest of Ursula Andress in "She" (1965) and then of Raquel Welch in "One Million Years B.C." (1966). This alternate history for the actual Welsh privateer Henry Morgan was made by Sam Katzman's unit at 20th Century Fox. Their first film had been "The Wizard of Baghdad" (1960). He did this under a verbal agreement with Buddy Adler then in September 1960 Robert Goldstein signed him to a three-picture contract. In the end he wound up making only one movie at Fox, "Pirates of Tortuga" (1961). Katzman made 239 films in every genre, including Tim McCoy westerns, the Leo Gorcey Bowery Boys series, Bela Lugosi as "The Ape Man" (1943), "Jungle Jim" (1948), Paul Henreid in "Last of the Buccaneers" (1950), "Mysterious Island" (1951), and "Rock Around the Clock" (1956) as well as a slew of 1960s Presley musicals. Webb signed to direct in December 1960. The same month, singer Dave King was signed to play a support role. Robert Stephens was then also under contract to Fox and was put in the cast. So, too, was Rafer Johnson. It was the first lead for Ken Scott who had been under contract to Fox for five years. The film was shot entirely on the Fox backlot in Los Angeles, using the water tank that had been created for the TV series "Adventures in Paradise" (1959-62). Johnson later recalled filming scenes of steering the boat "as a lot of fun, as were the scenes of fencing and hand to hand combat." Stock footage from "The Black Swan" (1942) and "Anne of the Indies" (1951) was enlarged and cropped to wide screen CinemaScope ratio. The two bar girls in a slap fight and the scene of bear wrestling, at the opening of the Jamaica sequence, were taken from "Anne of the Indies "(1951). The Los Angeles Times called the film "pure costume." A harmless trifle with decent action and Leticia Roman turning upside-down the genre female lead.
