You Wouldn't Expect a CHINATOWN here!! The Largest RURAL Chinatown in America! 河邊的中國城

*有中文字幕哦!!! (請按 CC) After the California Gold Rush and the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, the Chinese in the area were hired to build levees in the Sacramento Delta region, transforming a swampy, flood prone area into prime agricultural real estate. Many Chinese settled in the area afterwards to farm, and several Chinatowns were established along the Sacramento River. The Chinatowns in Courtland, Locke, Walnut Grove, and Isleton were once a place filled with festivities. The streets were filled with markets, restaurants, gambling halls, opium dens, brothels, schools, stores, etc. The Chinese were constantly faced with racism and discrimination. First, there were multiple incidents of "mysterious fires" that burned down Chinatown several times. To make matters worst, the US government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 which barred Chinese from immigrating into the US. With the Chinese population dwindling in the area, contractors were forced to look elsewhere to find hard working and cheap labor, and that's when the Japanese moved in. In Isleton and Walnut Grove, Chinatown and Japantown were next to each other. The Japantowns were also not safe from "mysterious fires" and discrimination as well. Once the US entered WW2, the Japanese were sent to relocation camps, which forced them to leave the delta region. As for the Chinese, many were able to obtain high education and eventually assimilated elsewhere in the US. . . . . . . . . Nowadays, there aren't many Chinese and Japanese living in the area. The buildings in the area have either transitioned to modern needs, or simply remained empty through out the years. If you are curious about the rich history of the Chinese and Japanese that once called this area home, I'd highly recommend visiting this area! ===================================================== Shameless Self Promotions:   / journey-to-californias-chinatowns   Blog: http://bokable.blogspot.com/ Instagram:   / jacksofftoadventures   Facebook:   / jacksofftoanotheradventure   YouTube:    / pepperboy1516   ===================================================== #japantown #chinatown #sacramento #stockton #lodi #isleton #walnutgrove #locke #courtland #riovista #sanfranciscochinatown #losangeleschinatown #manhattanchinatown #newyorkchinatown #oaklandchinatown #sacramentochinatown #stocktonchinatown #sanfranciscojapantown #littletokyo #sanjosejapantown
