V-belts are drive belts that run over at least 2 pulleys with a V-shape. Friction between the pulley and the V-belt transfers power from the drive pulley to the other pulley. V-belts are relatively low cost, they are easy to install, and they are available in many shapes and sizes. As a result, they are widely used in industry. Think for example of transport drives, fans, and automotive and agricultural equipment. There are 3 common types of V-belt; the classic V-belt, a V-belt with a narrower profile, and a toothed V-belt. The classic V-belt is designed according to DIN 2215. They are available in a wide variety of profiles. Small profiles are suitable for high belt speed and low torque applications. Large profiles are suitable for lower belt speeds and higher torques. The profile of the classic V-belt is indicated by one letter. The corresponding sizes indicate the width and height. The length of the V-belt is often indicated in inches. The narrow V-belt is designed according to DIN 7753. These have a relatively higher profile and can therefore transmit greater forces than those with classic profiles. As a result, fewer V-belts are needed to transmit the same power. The narrow V-belt works best with compact drives and drives that require greater power. The profile is indicated by 3 letters and the length is indicated in millimeters. In contrast to the classic and thin V-belts, the toothed V-belt has no coating. It is designed according to DIN 7753. Compared to coated V-belts, they are more wear-resistant and can transmit more power. Thanks to the teeth and the absence of covering, they are more flexible than V-belts with a narrow profile. This allows the belt to be used on smaller pulleys. As a result, this belt type is often the most suitable choice. To select the right profile, choose a corresponding code. If you need further help with selecting the right V-belt, such as how to calculate the required length of the V-belt, take a look at the technical article on our website tameson.com.
