VRS 2022 Motorcar Excursion | Vermont Rail System | NARCOA | NEREX

This is the 2022 NEREX motorcar excursion on the scenic Vermont Rail System. Travel began early on Saturday August 13th at the seton location in White River Junction, Vermont. Weather was beautiful the entire weekend. We travelled north along the Connecticut River from White River Junction approximately 100 rail miles to our turn around point in Newport near the Canadian border. Our average speed was 25-28 mph. We had a lovely dinner at the East Side Restaurant overlooking Lake Memphremagog. Departure was 8 a.m. Sunday morning and we made our way back along the same route to the original seton location. There were many beautiful sights including two round barns. The first was located in Newbury (approximately 8:41 minutes). And the 2nd was in Barnet which we travelled past right after lunch. It is called the Moore Round Barn and was built in 1899 (at approximately 12:30 minutes). If you love truss bridges this would be the excursion to watch. Of special note is the truss bridge that appears at 13:48. Originally called "No. 39 Fletcher Bridge", this structure was built in 1895 by the Edge Moor Bridge Works company. Many thanks to the VTrans Rail Bridge Management for providing photos and the original bridge plan which appears in the video. We would like to especially thank the Vermont Rail System, the host railroad, for their consent and cooperation making this excursion possible. And to the Excursion Coordinators for their tireless work making sure the event was safe and enjoyable for all. Although slow compared to a train or car, it is called speeder because it is faster than a human-powered vehicle such as a handcar. Motorized inspection cars date back to at least 1896, when it was reported that the U.S. Daimler Motor Company created a gasoline-powered rail inspection car capable of 15 mph (24 km/h). In the 1990s, many speeders were replaced by pickup trucks or sport utility vehicles with additional flanged wheels that could be lowered for travelling on rails, called "road–rail vehicles" or hi-rails for "highway-railroad". Speeders are collected by hobbyists, who refurbish them for excursions organized by the North American Railcar Operators Association[3] in the U.S. and Canada and the Australian Society of Section Car Operators, Inc. in Australia. - WIKIPEDIA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railroa...
