The wave of support the 25-year-old has received this year suggests his skills are plenty deep. R&B nuggets “Like I Want You” and “Heartbreak Anniversary” have created a groundswell around him, and that feature on Drake’s “Chicago Freestyle” didn’t hurt much, either. His storyline is cool. Mom encouraged his singing as he grew up in Long Beach, filling his head with Mary J Blige and Anita Baker. As a high-schooler he sang Miguel tunes because he had a high voice.
