Dr. Toppel's Adventure Dr.トッペル探検隊 - ALL - 1.005.740pts (no infinite)

What to do once the current Calice Cup is finished? Just go back to previous Calice games and play them again is what the doctor (Toppel) advised! What a cool game to return to, and what a nice score threshold to beat! Dr Toppel was my Calice Cup 7 sleeper hit and I had a lot of fun playing and optimizing this weird, janky but ultimately very cool shmup. I wanted to go for 1mil but despite my best and very unreasonably numerous attempts, I sadly fell short, at 980k    • Dr. Toppel's Adventure  Dr.トッペル探検隊 - ...   Even after that tourney was over, I knew I'd eventually come back to get the million. Coming across the game in one of the Recalbox cabs at HFS (a French arcade event) around two weeks ago felt like a sign : maybe now is the time to get that 7th digit. Calice Cup 8 is over and there's no big commitments for me (aside from continuous Chaos Field runs), so might as well do it! That said, brute-forcing it with the same strats wasn't gonna cut it. I had to think and come up with the best way to improve my consistency and make sure the checkpoint recoveries were as reliable as possible. The problem with my Calice strat was that even if things go perfectly right, there's just too many instances of the blaster item being quite tricky to get due to being on finicky waves, especially the fast green ones that don't stay on screen very long. No blaster means much less strength, and less potential for points as not every target in the stage can be easily destroyed. I had to sync the waves to get easy waves to recover on, but I can't sacrifice too many lives to get there since every life lost is one less instance of checkpoint milk. Doing the whole first part of the game without deaths naïvely seems the optimal way to go but by doing so you actually don't hit the wraparound point in enemy waves and seem stuck with pretty inconvenient end-game waves for the milk. So where to best SD? It was time to savestate and lab, unlike Calice where I only did full runs and couldn't be bothered with states. The solution I settled for? Hilarously enough, it was pretty simple and very similar to the previous strat : dying once in stage 1 on the second yellow enemy wave rather than after the third one. By shifting the spawns by just 2 waves, almost everything fell into place. Suddenly, no checkpoint is gonna have the fast green enemies as wave #2, and only one instance of the checkpoint milk will have fast blue stars in slot 2 that prevent getting the blaster (I couldn't work around those sadly) There's also another source of points I added to my repertoire : improved anemone destruction. While recovering powerups by killing air enemies in the initial st6 corridor is key, one must not forget the ball spawners on the sides. They are worth 2k each, which adds up! I now try to kill them in between air waves. Putting those new strategies to use in runs proved quite satisfying! It was a relief not needing very specific bait strats to get all the fast green enemies and their powerup. The median run's scoring potential increased as well, which is always good for morale. A streaming session confirmed I was on the right path even if I didn't get 1mil there   / 2144013858   I even know I have a bit of leeway, as even that new strat can't avoid the misery of pink stars and accounts for them by having 2 SDs planned later on during the checkpoint milk if everything goes right and I go as far in the waves as to meet said pink stars. This also means even some accidental deaths earlier do not spell the end of the run...as long as I keep my cool and don't desync the waves in ugly ways. Enter this run which at first seemed to go as planned : going through the checkpoints, enjoying the relatively easy recoveries (exploding balls are still hard though!)...until it started going haywire. Accidental deaths here and there, waves not being in sync, the classic death spiral. I still kept at it but without big expectations, and had to rely on emergency strats for fast green enemy waves more than I wanted lol. And even though all my score buffer was eaten by the deaths...by the final life, it looked like maybe 1 million was still barely possible. I sacrified my last extra life and went into the checkpoint one last time, knowing I can not fuck up for this. That final checkpoint run was harrowing with tons of close calls with exploding balls near me. I miraculously dodged it all, made it through the maze, defeated boss 6, and then made it to the last stage, still unsure whether my score was high enough. Not a lot of moneybags in st7, will the bosses be enough? There's 16k for the final beach balls at the end at least, but even then, it's uncertain. And please don't die!! Thankfully, I (barely) got my million! Phew... ...You know what's the craziest thing? With no unplanned deaths, there's potential for even more! 1.1mil next? Played on MAME 0.259 8.57Hz and 30Hz rapidfire, World version No infinite, 1UPs collected only once
