Specificity in training essentially means choosing exercises that most closely resemble the activity you are training for. For example, a functional coach might use exercises that involve the transverse plane (cable woodchop/cable punch out) to train a batter how to swing. Likewise, exercises like the truck push may be superior to the squat for running speed. But is this a golden rule? Does specificity always apply? The likes of Mark Rippetoe disagree and even point to another effect: interference.
